Faithwalking
Foundations Module 1
Awareness Through Self-discovery
Module 1 Overview
In this module, we invite you to see yourself in the context of your experience of spiritual formation. Spiritual formation is the process of transforming the inmost dimension of the human being in such a way that its natural expression comes from the individual’s truest and best self. Spiritual formation is an ongoing, long-term process that is not a religious activity. Spiritual formation is a human activity. You don’t get to decide if your spirit will be formed. You only get to have some measure of say over who or what forms your spirit.
In this module, you will learn tools for building self-awareness and self-discovery. You will reflect on both the positive and the negative of your first formation. You will learn how your first formation wounded you and how those wounds are impacting your life, and you will learn how to make positive declarations that move your life forward in a healthier direction.
Getting Started
Module 1 is the beginning of the Faithwalking Foundations curriculum. The online class is offered in 10 sessions of 75 minutes each.
During your group sessions you will discuss what you are learning, what you are getting present to in your own life, and how you are applying what you are learning. You will have four coaching sessions in between your main sessions.
A “getting into action” section will guide you in completing your homework for each session.
To complete Module 1 Online you will need:
- A computer with videoconference capabilities and a fast and stable internet connection.
- A headset or headphones with microphone.
- A quiet place where you can connect and focus during the online meetings.
- To participate in at least 9 of the 10 scheduled sessions. If you miss more than one of the sessions, you won’t be able to complete FW Module 1.
- To complete the homework assigned each week, which will include reading the content for the next session, spending time in solitude, and watching videos.
You will receive reading material in preparation for your sessions. We encourage you to recruit people who love you to pray for you during this process. We believe God will use your commitment to learning and allowing His loving work in you through this work. We are praying for you.
Below is an outline of the content of Module 1:
Module 1 Session Topics
Session 1: Awareness
We believe that becoming aware is crucial if we are going to become more whole. With awareness, we gain more control over our lives and can break the cycles that are leading to a default future. Awareness is both liberating and life-giving.
Session 2: First Formation
Formation is a human process. We all are formed. Our first formation began at birth and was mostly complete by the time we left home. We were formed by our families, schools, churches, friends, clubs, authority figures and culture. Being formed means we learned who we are and how we had to “show up in the world” to be safe and loved.
Session 3: Vows
Vows are conscious or unconscious decisions we make based on our past experiences about how we must show up in life in order to feel safe and to have our needs met. When our vows get triggered, we react without thinking. It is only by understanding our triggers and bringing them into our awareness that we can get freedom from them.
Session 4: Declarations
We believe that God invites us to “co-create” a preferred future for our lives when we join our word with God’s word. Positive declarations are statements about who we want to be and about how we want to show up even when we get triggered. When we make a positive declaration, we give our word to ourselves to behave in a certain way.
